The Israeli army announced that it is carrying out “heavy strikes” in the Gaza Strip. At least 308 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip early this morning, after negotiations to extend the truce with Hamas stalled.

At least 308 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip overnight, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said. It was previously reported that at least 200 people were killed.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they were targeting what they called “terrorist targets” belonging to Hamas.

This is the largest wave of airstrikes in Gaza since the ceasefire began on January 19. Negotiations to extend the ceasefire in Gaza have not been reached.

Three houses were hit in Deir Al-Balah in central Gaza, a building in Gaza City and targets in Khan Yunis and Rafah, Reuters reported, citing a doctor and witnesses.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the attacks on Tuesday morning, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office.

“This came after Hamas repeatedly refused to release hostages and rejected all proposals received from mediators and US envoy Steve Vitkoff,” the statement said.

Israel has ended the ceasefire in Gaza and is bombing the Strip, targeting tents, schools and shelters for displacement.

“Israel will from now on act against Hamas with increasing military force,” it added.

The plan for the attacks “was presented by the IDF over the weekend and approved by the political leadership,” it said.

Israel consulted with the administration of US President Donald Trump before carrying out the attack, a White House spokesman told Fox News.

Negotiators are trying to find a way forward after the first phase of the temporary truce ended on March 1.

The US proposed extending the first phase until mid-April, including a further exchange of hostages held by Hamas and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

But a Palestinian official familiar with the talks told the BBC that Israel and Hamas did not agree on key aspects of the agreement set out by Vitkoff in indirect talks.

The war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas killed more than 1,200 people in southern Israel, mostly civilians, and took 251 hostages.

The attack launched an Israeli military offensive that has since killed more than 48,520 people, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health, which is used by the United Nations and others.

Most of Gaza’s 2.1 million residents have been displaced multiple times.

An estimated 70% of buildings have been damaged or destroyed, health, water and sanitation systems are collapsing, and there is a shortage of food, fuel, medicine and shelter.
