The Tampa Bay Rays’ stadium, known as Tropicana Field, was left roofless after Hurricane Milton hit Florida in the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
Once the worst of the storm had passed and the weather began to calm down, the first photos emerged, bearing witness to the destructive power of the wind.
Photos from the scene show that the roof of the stadium, opened in 1990, was completely demolished, while casualties were miraculously avoided.

This building was supposed to serve as a base camp for first responders who were to arrive on the scene to help clean up the aftermath and rescue those who were not fortunate enough to get to safety in time.
The strength of the wind that hit this area is evident from the fact that the Tropicana Field roof was built to withstand winds of 185 kilometers per hour.
The fact that the roof of this building had no theoretical chance of withstanding the storm is shown by the fact that, at the time it hit Tampa Bay, Hurricane Milton’s winds were blowing between 200 and 250 kilometers per hour.
At the time of its construction in 1990, the stadium cost $130 million, which, converted to today’s dollar value, means $300 million.
