The pilot of a light sport aircraft that crashed into the tallest skyscraper in Beijing has died, the Chaoyang district government announced today. It stated that only the pilot was on board the aircraft when it struck the CITIC Tower, according to the South China Morning Post. Thirteen other people were injured in the accident.

A plane roughly the size of a car crashed yesterday into Beijing’s tallest building, the CITIC Tower, after which police blocked access to the site and prohibited bystanders from filming the scene of the incident, witnesses said.

The CITIC Tower, also known as China Zun, has 109 floors and is located in the central business district of Beijing, Reuters reported. It houses the headquarters of the state-owned CITIC Group conglomerate.

According to witnesses, two glass panels on the upper floors of the building were damaged. One witness told Reuters that around 6 p.m. local time he heard a loud impact and then saw the aircraft embedded in the building.

“The noise was extremely loud, louder than fireworks,” he said.

Another witness stated that he came to the scene after seeing unverified photos on social media showing the remains of a small aircraft on the road next to the skyscraper. Posts about the incident were soon removed from Chinese social media, the agency reported.

Police quickly sealed off access to the building and prevented passersby from filming the scene. Witnesses describe the sound as extremely loud, “louder than fireworks,” and said two glass panels on the upper floors were damaged.
