In Montenegro, 256,463 citizens declared themselves as Montenegrins, while 205,370 declared themselves as Serbs, according to the official census results. 41.12% declared themselves as Montenegrins, and 32.93% as Serbs. 43.18% of citizens speak Serbian, and 34.52% speak Montenegrin.

Bosniaks make up 9.45%, or 58,956. Albanians make up 4.97%, or 30,978. There are 10,162 Muslims and 12,824 Russians, or 2.06%. 17,907 citizens, or 2.88%, did not want to declare their nationality.

The average age is 39.7 years. Women, on average, are 38 years old, and men are 36 years old. Over 93% of citizens have Montenegrin citizenship. A total of 667,650 people were counted.

According to the preliminary results of the census, 633,158 people live in Montenegro, which is 2% more than in 2011.

A Delayed Process

The census in Montenegro was supposed to be held in 2021, but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The process was carried out from December 3 to 28 last year, after its start was postponed several times due to the demands of the opposition and minority groups for certain conditions to be met before its implementation. Citizens had the right and the opportunity from October 1 to 7 to verify their data on ethno-cultural characteristics collected by the census of population, households, and dwellings through special software.

What were the 2011 census data?

According to Vijesti, according to the 2011 census, 44.97% of the population were Montenegrins (278,865), 28.72% were Serbs (178,110), 8.64% were Bosniaks (53,605), 4.9% were Albanians (30,439), 3.31% were Muslims (20,537), Roma were 1% (6,251), and Croats were 0.97% (6,021). In that census, 0.33% of citizens declared themselves as Serbs-Montenegrins (2,103), 0.33% as Egyptians (2,054), and 0.29% as Montenegrins-Serbs (1,833). When it comes to language, the portal Analitika reports that in 2011, 42.9% of the population spoke Serbian, and 36.9% spoke Montenegrin.
