U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order today to dissolve the country’s Department of Education, CNN reports.
The executive order instructs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education.”
The British Guardian states that this move is an attempt by Trump to bypass the necessary approval of Congress for such an action.
At the signing ceremony, Trump stated that the administration could continue pushing for Congress to shut down the department, as its budget has more than doubled in recent years, while national test scores have not improved, according to the Guardian.

The order also stipulates that all remaining programs or activities funded by the Department of Education should not promote gender ideology.
The U.S. federal government does not dictate school curricula, as this responsibility falls on state and local governments, which provide 90% of school funding.
Trump has repeatedly called for the department’s elimination, referring to it as a “massive scam.” The closure of the Department of Education fulfills one of his key campaign promises, the Guardian recalls.
