Former Serbia national football team captain Nemanja Matić has filed a criminal complaint against former Football Association of Serbia (FSS) president Slaviša Kokeza on suspicion of endangering his safety.

In a statement to KRIK, Matić said he filed the complaint for endangering his safety two weeks ago at the police station in Ub, his hometown, but declined to comment further on the case.

Matić took this step after KRIK published Kokeza’s communications on the encrypted messaging application Sky, which, according to the investigative outlet, show that in 2020 Kokeza sought out members of the criminal underworld to threaten Matić and other footballers who had publicly supported Nemanja Vidić after he criticized the leadership of the Football Association of Serbia and Kokeza himself.

Following the publication of that report, Vidić also filed a criminal complaint. He submitted it to Serbia’s Public Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime, which told the N1 news portal last week that the former footballer had been invited to give a statement regarding the allegations.

According to KRIK, Kokeza used the Sky application to enlist criminals and members of the Italian mafia in an effort to target Vidić because he feared the former Manchester United captain would replace him as president of the Football Association of Serbia. In addition to Vidić, other footballers who publicly supported him—including Matić and Danko Lazović—also allegedly became targets.
