Two months spent with relatives and friends, going for walks, swimming and discovering the beauty of Serbia made Nana and Marta’s summer truly special. After returning to Chicago, their mother contacted the Mileva Project to share their impressions and a simple, heartfelt message: “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
When an ocean separates a family, time spent together becomes especially precious. For children growing up in America, visiting Serbia offers an opportunity to embrace their loved ones, discover places they have heard about since early childhood and create some of life’s most beautiful memories. The Mileva Project, a nonprofit organization that funds round-trip airline tickets for children of Serbian descent from America, was founded with the aim of making such reunions possible for as many children as possible.
With support from the Mileva Project, Nana and Marta spent two months in Serbia. In the messages their mother sent, the names of the places they visited are interspersed with the joy of reuniting with loved ones and gratitude for a trip that meant so much to the entire family.
A Summer Filled with Reunions and Little Adventures
Divčibare, Tara, Belgrade, Kraljevo, Vrnjačka Banja and Lopatnica were among the destinations on their journey through Serbia. They also went rafting on the Tara and Drina rivers, went swimming and enjoyed walks around Sombor and Novi Sad. Each of these places became part of their summer and the memories they took home with them.
And between excursions and sightseeing, there was time for the very thing that often makes a trip to Serbia so eagerly anticipated — reunions with family and friends.
“The children had a wonderful time. We visited all our closest relatives, the entire family and our friends. We went swimming and took walks around Sombor and Novi Sad. It was truly wonderful,” their mother wrote.
Two months meant there was time for new places and new people, for adventures, but also for frequent family gatherings. These are precisely the kinds of days that give children the opportunity to feel close to their family and make Serbia a part of their upbringing.
“Thank You from the Bottom of Our Hearts”
After returning to Chicago, their mother wanted to share the joy of the trip with the people who had made it possible.
“Once again, a huge thank you to the Mileva Project, which made this magical trip possible and made it so special for us! We are sending you lots of greetings and gratitude. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
Her message captured everything the Mileva Project stands for — the children’s happiness, the family’s joy and gratitude for the time they were able to spend together.
Nana and Marta now have their own memories of Serbia, its mountains and rivers, the cities they explored on foot and the people with whom they shared their summer. They have taken these experiences home with them, and they will remain part of their family story, even now that they have returned to their everyday lives in Chicago.
So That Even More Children Can Experience a Summer in Serbia
For many families in the diaspora, visiting Serbia is a wish that is often postponed because of travel expenses. By funding round-trip tickets for children, the Mileva Project eases the financial burden on families and helps make long-awaited reunions with loved ones possible.
We invite individuals and companies to support future trips through donations and help even more children bring home beautiful memories of Serbia. You can contribute through a one-time payment or regular monthly donations. Donation link: https://milevaproject.org/sr-cy/donate
If you would like your children to spend time with family in Serbia and get to know the country their roots come from, sign them up to participate. Registration link: https://milevaproject.org/sr-cy/signup
We believe that next summer, many children, just like Nana and Marta, will have plenty of wonderful stories to tell when they return from Serbia.
