European Democrats have spoken out regarding the elections in Serbia, stating that the Serbian Progressive Party and President Aleksandar Vučić are responsible for violence and intimidation, and that accredited observers and activists were attacked in front of polling stations in Bajina Bašta.
In a post on social media, the European Democrats state that there are testimonies about groups connected to the SNS that operated around polling stations and created an atmosphere of fear.
“According to reports from Serbia, accredited election observers and activists were attacked and intimidated in front of polling stations in Bajina Bašta. Witnesses describe groups of individuals associated with Aleksandar Vučić’s SNS operating around polling stations, creating fear and suppressing oversight,” the post states.
The European Democrats assess that such events are not isolated cases, but part of a broader pattern.
“This is Aleksandar Vučić’s democracy and this is not an incident, but a system. When violence protects the government, elections are no longer free,” they say.
In the post, they also addressed the European People’s Party, raising the question of their responsibility.
“Friends from the European People’s Party, how can you justify this? Is this truly the standard you accept from your own political family?”, the European Democrats say, recalling that the SNS is an associate member of the EPP.
