After years of slogans and incentives, 2025 brought a historic low in the number of births, despite a simultaneous drop in mortality.

Eight years ago, in 2018, Serbia launched a campaign to promote childbirth – using slogans. Subsequently, the state, cities, and municipalities began allocating funds for newborns. President Aleksandar Vučić urged citizens to have children, warning that otherwise there would be no workforce for factories. However, judging by the statistical data, these measures have yielded little result.

During 2025, 1,866 fewer children were born compared to the previous year. For the first time in modern Serbian history, fewer than 60,000 children were born in a single year.

According to data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (RZS), from January to December 2025, 58,445 live births were recorded, a decrease of 1,866, or 3.1 percent, compared to the same period in 2024.

In addition to the decline in live births, there were also fewer deaths in 2025.

Last year, 94,831 people died, a drop of 3,210, or 3.3 percent, compared to the January–December period of the previous year, RZS reported.

This is also the lowest number of deaths in the past ten years.

In the previous decade, the number of deaths in Serbia generally exceeded 100,000 annually, with the worst year being 2021, when more than 136,000 residents passed away.
