“I would like to reach an agreement the easy way, but if we don’t do it the easy way, we will do it the hard way. Otherwise, I am also a fan of Denmark. I have to tell you, they were very kind to me. I am a big admirer of theirs,” said the White House chief.
When asked how much money he would offer Denmark for Greenland, Trump said he is not discussing money at the moment, but that he “could talk about it.”
The emphasis, Trump said, is on security reasons.
The United States must own Greenland to prevent Russia or China from occupying it in the future, Trump said, adding that he will “do something about Greenland, whether they like it or not.”
“If we don’t do it, Russia or China will take over Greenland, and we don’t want Russia or China as neighbors,” Trump told reporters at the White House after meeting with representatives of the U.S. oil industry.
Top diplomats based in Washington for Greenland and Denmark met on Thursday with White House officials, while Greenland continues to insist that it is not for sale.
Danish Ambassador Jesper Møller Sørensen and the head of Greenland’s representation in the U.S., Jakob Isbosetsen, met with Trump’s advisors, according to CNN diplomats familiar with the situation.
U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio said that next week he will speak with officials from Denmark and Greenland regarding Washington’s interest in taking over Greenland. Rubio noted that Donald Trump’s intention has always been for the U.S. to buy Greenland.
Denmark and Greenland had previously requested a meeting with U.S. officials.
