After surviving shameful insults on social media due to their modest Slava table, Milan Marković, with his wife and six children, welcomed the most joyful Christian holiday with smiles and the hope brought to them by human solidarity.
Just a few weeks ago, the Marković family from Sopot was the target of ridicule by millions of people around the world. The video of their modest dinner for Saint Nicholas, which consisted of only a flatbread and fish, became viral in the West, where social media users, unaware of the family’s difficult financial situation, mocked their poverty.
Today, the image from the Marković home is completely different. Father Milan published photos from the Christmas Eve celebration on his Instagram profile that touched the heart of Serbia.
In the new photos, smiling children can be seen gathered around the traditional table. Along with the obligatory Christmas wheat, flatbread, and yule log, the children posed in a festive mood. Although the table is still modest in accordance with fasting customs, there is no longer a shadow of worry on the faces of the little ones.
-Happy Christmas Eve – Milan wrote briefly alongside symbols of prayer and love, while messages of support from all over the world, from Brazil to Serbia, lined up in the comments.
This Christmas Eve has special significance for the Markovićs because it is likely the last one they spend in inadequate housing. As Milan previously confirmed, thanks to a humanitarian organization and people of goodwill who mobilized after the shameful attacks on the internet, the family’s greatest life problem has been solved – they are getting a new house.
-Our greatest life problem has been solved. We will have our freedom and a yard where the children will be able to play without fear. Everything still seems like a dream to us – Milan stated recently.
The irony of this story lies in the fact that it was precisely the video made with the intention to humiliate the family that became the “trigger” for a wave of kindness. The American who first shared the video has since apologized, and Milan points out that “out of evil intention came a noble deed.”
The legal procedure regarding taking over the new home is expected immediately after the holidays, and until then, the Markovićs celebrate Christmas in peace and joy, aware that they are no longer alone and that their faith, despite the trials, was rewarded in the end.
