European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos welcomed the adoption of a set of amendments to the election laws in Serbia, which were proposed by the Member of Parliament from the Serbian Progressive Party, Miroslav Petrašinović.

“I welcome Serbia’s adoption of four electoral laws, in line with ODIHR recommendations,” Kos wrote on her official account on the social network X.

The European Commissioner assessed that the adoption of amendments to the election laws is “the first important step towards supporting free and fair elections.”

“We continue to work closely with the Serbian authorities regarding the adoption of the two key remaining laws on anti-corruption and political activities financing,” Kos announced.

As a reminder, the members of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia adopted yesterday a set of amendments to the Law on the Election of Members of Parliament, the Law on Local Elections, the Law on the Election of the President of the Republic, and the Law on the Constitutional Court.

The majority of opposition MPs were not in the chamber during the vote on the so-called Petrašinović laws, and during the debate, they assessed that these were just “cosmetic changes.”
