A younger individual has been arrested in connection with the fire in the Vjesnik tower, the Zagreb Police Department announced.

As Jutarnji unofficially learns, the minor voluntarily turned himself in to the police and explained that on the critical evening he had been inside the Vjesnik building with a group of younger individuals. He said they had planned to climb to the top of the tower but found the doors on the upper floors locked and could not go further. At one point, one of the young men in the group set cardboard on fire, and the flames quickly spread. At that moment, according to the minor’s statement to the police, they all scattered and left the building.

The group reportedly consists mostly of minors aged around 16 and 17, who allegedly live near Vjesnik.

We publish the statement of the Zagreb Police Department in full:

“From the moment we learned of the fire in the Vjesnik office building, the police, in addition to securing the scene and taking measures to ensure the safety of citizens, began a criminal investigation.

In the initial phase of the investigation, it is extremely important to quickly and unobstructedly gather information from all persons who may provide useful knowledge about the event. A complicating factor is when this information is publicly disclosed, as it may jeopardize police work and risk that findings reach persons who should be encompassed by the investigation.

We confirm that the ongoing criminal investigation has included several younger individuals, one of whom has been arrested and is currently under criminal investigation. Since timely informing of the public is important to us, guided by the interest of an efficient criminal investigation, we will provide additional information as soon as circumstances allow,” the statement reads.
