“The female students of Serbia, in addition to the brutality of the state apparatus and regime mercenaries that their male student colleagues endured, also had to cope with attempts to be humiliated precisely because they are women. They did not hide, and today they are not hiding behind anyone,” the jury statement reads.

As representatives of the female students of Serbia, the award was presented to Ružica Ristivojević, a student at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade.

The award is presented by a jury consisting of previous winners of this award, including police major Katarina Petrović, prosecutor Bojana Savović, coordinator of the “Women in Black” organization and activist Staša Zajović, actress Milena Radulović, journalist Tamara Skrozza, N1 television journalist and editor Danica Vučenić.

The “Conquest of Freedom” award was established in 2001, in memory of the journalist and activist Maja Maršićević Tasić (1965-2001), and is presented on the day when the former president Slobodan Milošević was defeated in the elections. It is received by women for their contribution and work in promoting human rights, the rule of law, democracy, and tolerance in political communication.
