US citizen Michael Gloss, the son of the deputy head of the CIA, who died fighting for Russia in the so-called special military operation, died a heroic death, said Russian Air Force Commander Mikhail Teplinsky on Tuesday at a ceremony naming school N115 in the occupied part of the Ukrainian region of Donetsk after Ivan Kokovin and Michael Gloss, who were awarded the Order of Courage, Jutarnji.hr writes.
“He truly died a heroic death. He, like many others, strived to liberate Donbas,” the Russian commander said, as reported by the Russian state news agency Tass.
“We told his parents what he did. They can be proud of their son because he grew up to be a worthy citizen of both the United States and, we can say, the Russian Federation,” he continued. “Maybe others consider him strange, but to us, he was an ordinary paratrooper, fulfilling his duties just like all the rest of us, fighting side by side with us,” Teplinsky told reporters. “He fought in the Chasiv Yar area, he was liberating Donbas,” he added.
“Just like many others, he participated in assault actions side by side with his brothers in arms,” he said, adding that many foreign citizens are fighting on the Russian side in the special military operation in Ukraine.
Last month, CNN reported, citing a senior US administration official, that Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East and Ukraine, presented the Order of Courage, awarded by Russian President Vladimir Putin, to the family of Michael Gloss. According to CNN’s source, Witkoff considered it proper for the Order of Courage to be handed over to the deceased’s mother, Juliane Gallina, who has been the Deputy Director of the CIA for Digital Innovation since February 2024.
In April, Michael’s father, Larry Gloss, said in an interview with The Washington Post that his son was killed in the self-proclaimed separatist so-called Donetsk People’s Republic. “For us, it was a complete surprise that he had any military relationship with Russia,” said the deceased’s father.
