Today is the celebration of Saint Martyr Antony. Because of Christ he was tortured, but he did not renounce his faith, despite the suffering.
Saint Martyr Antony was a native of the city of Alexandria. As a Christian, he led a life pleasing to God. Brought before the pagan prince, he fearlessly declared his faith in Christ. For this he was tortured, beaten, and scraped, but he would not renounce Christ. Finally, he was thrown into the fire, and before it he said to the people:
“My beloved brothers, do not be a slave to the body, but care more for the soul, which was given to you by God and is akin to God and divine powers.”
And so, teaching the people and burning in the fire, he handed over his holy soul to God. The martyr’s holy body was found in the fire completely whole and unharmed, and not a single hair on his head was singed.
