Seventeen Serbian families in “Braće Matović” street in Lešak near Leposavić have received notice from the municipal leadership to vacate their homes, which they built in recent decades, writes RTS.
The notice, signed by the Mayor of Leposavić Municipality, Ljuljzim Hetemi, and delivered to residents by his deputy Marina Bogojević, demands that the families leave their residential buildings within one month. It states that they are obligated to remove personal belongings and furniture, as well as useful building materials, because their houses will be demolished.
Members of the 17 families gather daily after receiving the municipal authority’s decision, and they told RTS that they refuse to leave the houses they built 20 years ago. They say they are ready to defend their property with their bodies when demolition machines arrive, property they acquired with great difficulty and without anyone’s help.
“We regularly paid for electricity, submitted requests for legalization back in 2010 to the then municipal leadership, and we will not allow someone from Priština to come now and demolish our houses. Let them first demolish more than 350,000 illegal buildings across Kosovo, then they can come to us; we will have to wait a long time until then,” said Uroš Vasović from Lešak, from one of the affected families.
Along with the other families, they hope that the worst-case scenario will not occur, stating that they will defend what they have acquired to the end and calling on the authorities in Belgrade to help them.
They say that for the land on which they built their houses, they received permits for erecting temporary structures from the local administration in Leposavić, before and after the conflict in Kosovo and Metohija, based on which most built residential buildings.
The municipal government in Leposavić was elected in snap elections that Serbs in northern Kosovo and Metohija boycotted. The affected Serbian families say that the new municipal leadership has not offered them any alternative accommodation or living arrangements along with the eviction demand.
In previous days, the new municipal government in Leposavić closed the sports hall and the premises of the tourist organization, which operated under the system of the Serbian Government, which caused opposition from employees, then athletes, youth, and children.
The new local government has also verbally informed several Serbian families in Leposavić in recent days to leave apartments they received from the Commissariat for Refugees, which were built with funds from the Serbian Government.
