A volunteer cleanup action called “Roll Up Your Sleeves,” organized by several environmental organizations, will be held today from 10 AM to 12 PM at around 400 registered locations across Serbia.
The aim of the action is to remove waste from nature, clean parks, forests, rivers, and settlements, and to raise awareness about the importance of environmental responsibility.
“Roll Up Your Sleeves” is a national cleanup campaign in Serbia that takes place several times a year and aims to raise awareness about the major problem of unsanitary municipal and city landfills, the problem of littering in nature, as well as to mobilize citizens.
One of the locations is the Stepa Stepanović settlement in Belgrade.
“We are slowly gathering, as part of the 13th ‘Roll Up Your Sleeves’ action. The Stepa Stepanović settlement is just one location; the action is taking place at over 400 locations. People are self-organized, it’s all our personal engagement, and we are doing what the institutions are not doing, and this has been the case for 13 years,” said Aleksandar Đorđević, from the Stepa Stepanović Residents’ Association.

He stated that the Public Utility Company “does not want to collect that garbage.”
“We will collect the garbage at one location, and then we will see what to do with it next. Citizens (who are participating in the action) wear gloves, but that doesn’t help with ticks. You see how many small children there are. Stepa is the youngest settlement in Belgrade and has been fighting for a kindergarten, a health center, and basic amenities for 13 years,” he said.
He mentioned that the settlement “has not been taken over for maintenance, only the main street has.”
