Three months after the tragedy at the Novi Sad train station, where a roof collapsed and killed fifteen people, students organized a peaceful protest, blocking three bridges – the Liberty Bridge, the Žeželj Bridge, and the Varadin Bridge.
The protest, which gathered citizens from all over Serbia, aimed to mark this tragic anniversary, support the victims’ families in their search for justice and accountability, and draw public attention to the need for responsibility to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Although the protest was peaceful and civic, the organizers wanted to send a strong message about the importance of accountability. Citizens gathered in other places in the city center, and students welcomed everyone who joined them with applause.
The bridge blockade caused large traffic jams and slowdowns, especially at the entrances to Novi Sad, where lines of vehicles and buses from Belgrade and other cities formed. Despite the traffic difficulties, the atmosphere among the protesters was one of solidarity and positivity, with food and drinks being shared.
Protesters believe that those responsible for the tragedy have not yet been adequately sanctioned and that the victims’ families are still waiting for justice. They hope that their protest will contribute to putting pressure on the authorities to fulfill their demands.
