In the Church of Saint Nicholas in Pristina, which was burned down in the March 2004 pogrom in Kosovo and rebuilt a few years later, the church’s slava (patron saint’s day) was celebrated with a liturgy and the cutting of a slava cake.

The liturgy was served by Pristina parish priest Staniša Arsić, in front of several dozen believers, who emphasized in his sermon that the Serbian people have faced many troubles from ancient times to the present day, and thanked the believers for remembering that church in Pristina even on other days, Kosovo Online reports.

“Let us, brothers and sisters, follow the example of Saint Nicholas, at least in part, knowing that only with our effort will we become like the Lord and He will take it for our good. I thank everyone who remembers to come and visit this temple, not only on the slava, but also on other Sundays and holidays. We are pious when we keep the commandments, when we do everything that our church commands, but without communion and liturgy, we are nothing,” said Father Staniša.

Stefan Jovanović from Livade, the slava maker, emphasized that this is a special day for him and his family.

“Saint Nicholas has gathered us to pray for the salvation of the people in these areas. I invite believers to come, not only on this holiday, but whenever they find time, to entrust themselves to faith, to believe in God, to remain our own after all these years, glorifying Christ God. For me, this is a special day, because I have been honored to be the host. I wish that all those who celebrate may spend the slava in peace and prosperity. The church in Pristina, life in it continues. They say that Pristina is a gray city, but only those who have been here know that Pristina was and will remain a city that has a soul, just like this temple,” said Jovanović.

The family of Aleksandra Jovanović from Gračanica will be the slava makers next year. As she pointed out, it is a special honor.

“Saint Nicholas has been the protector of my family since ancient times, so it is all the more honor, considering that we will be the hosts next year,” she emphasized.

The Church of Saint Nicholas was built by Orthodox Serbs from Pristina in 1833 on the foundations of a medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery, but it was burned down along with the parish home in the March 2004 pogrom. It was rebuilt a few years later.
