The Ukrainian Air Force announced that Russia launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from the Astrakhan region early this morning. The attack was directed at Dnipro, using “various types of projectiles.”
This is the first time that Russia has launched an ICBM towards Ukraine during the conflict, according to the BBC. These missiles are capable of traveling thousands of kilometers.
The Ukrainian military also reported that six Kh-101 cruise missiles were shot down during the attack.
The strike comes just days after Washington gave Ukraine the green light to use longer-range missiles like the ATACMS, which Ukraine reportedly used earlier this week to target Russian military bases.
The regional commander of Dnipro stated that two people were injured after Russia launched the missile.
A 57-year-old man was treated for injuries at the scene, while a 42-year-old woman was taken to the hospital, Serhi Lisak reported on Telegram.
The attack damaged a rehabilitation center for people with disabilities, but no injuries were reported there. Additionally, it was reported that nine garages and one “industrial enterprise” were also damaged, Lisak added.
Two more people were injured and are currently in the hospital after an attack on Kryvyi Rih, west of Dnipro. The administrative building was destroyed, and two residential buildings were damaged, according to Lisak.

What Are ICBMs?
Ballistic missiles are capable of traveling thousands of kilometers from the area from which they were launched.
There are four types of ballistic missiles – short-range, medium-range, intermediate-range, and long-range.
Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) have the longest range – capable of traveling over 5,500 km.
This means that ICBMs can target sites virtually anywhere in the world.
ICBMs can carry conventional weapons, but also nuclear warheads. They are initially propelled by rockets and then follow a trajectory without propulsion towards their targets.
Ballistic missiles differ from cruise missiles, which travel using jet engines, similar to those used for aircraft propulsion.
Cruise missiles, like the Storm Shadow projectiles Ukraine fired at Russia yesterday, travel shorter distances but can be manually guided to their target.
