Novak Đoković continues his battle for a 25th Grand Slam title and another page in tennis history, which he has written countless times before.1 He faces Miomir Kecmanović in the third round on Saturday evening as his next obstacle.2
However, being the greatest Serbian athlete of all time, it seems, is not enough to have one’s own opinion and avoid the brutal media propaganda, in this case, carried out by the regime’s media and politicians who glorified him when it suited them.
Thus, on the morning program of “Pink” television, former minister Zorana Mihajlović, who has recently been returning to public life in Serbia, saw fit to attack Novak Đoković for his gesture at Wimbledon.3
To recap, the greatest Serbian athlete of all time celebrated after winning both his first and second-round matches by simulating a “pumping” motion, an expression that has become a symbol of the protests in Serbia that have been ongoing since December last year.
Although he stated in post-match interviews that it was a matter between him and his children, due to his previous public expressions of support for the protests and Wimbledon’s rigorous policy on political statements, it is believed that Đoković implicitly supported the protests in Serbia once again.
This deeply bothered the former minister.
“You have the statement of Novak Đoković, undeniably a fantastic athlete and a Monaco taxpayer. His family is from Kosovo, and he won Wimbledon and is ‘pumping’ and explaining why he did it. First, he hides behind his children, which I think is very ugly, and secondly, he is siding with those who commit violence in this country and is siding with those who want an independent Kosovo,” the former minister bluntly stated.
While the actions of protesters can be interpreted as violence from the perspective of those who do not support them, it is shameful and scandalous to link them with support for Kosovo’s independence, as no such support has ever been voiced at any of the protests.
The statement is also scandalous due to the fact that Mihajlović was part of the government which, since 2012, has done more for Kosovo’s independence than anyone before it, as during that period the most institutions were shut down and abolished, the most unfavorable agreements were signed, and many other moves were made that aided an independent Kosovo.
It is also scandalous due to the comment about him being a Monaco taxpayer, even though through his foundation and many other actions, Novak Đoković has done more for the Serbian people than the aforementioned former minister through her actions in power.
However, that was not the end of the shameful comments in the said morning program, as host Predrag Sarapa also joined in.
“One riddle. His father supports SPS, his uncle SNS, his wife Đilas, he roots for Zvezda, his son for Partizan. He’s covered all bases, no matter who wins.”
Then a female voice joined in.
“But that’s not accidental, and it’s possible he’s setting the stage to start a political career.”
This was quite amusing and entertaining to the former minister, who then took it upon herself to call out Đoković for his responsibility.
“Because he hasn’t achieved certain interests, that’s why this is happening. I don’t think it’s right. I’m terribly surprised. You can’t just stand by; you have a certain responsibility, he is a Serb, and you need to behave responsibly. What you think inside is your business, but you have a social responsibility and you cannot side with bullies, and that’s the biggest problem.”
If we look at the situation, it’s clear that we are at a moment when numerous athletes have chosen one side or the other. Why do Janko Tipsarević and Dejan Tomašević have a greater right to support and be members of the current regime, or on the other hand, Dejan Bodiroga or Mihajlo Dudaš to be against it?
The problem is that none of those mentioned have the weight of Novak Đoković in the Serbian nation, and it is clear that the regime fears him. Because of this, the same regime launched a brutal smear campaign, but the problem is that history remembers everything, including the words of the former minister.
For example, the same Zorana, in 2019, after Đoković won his fifth title at the same Wimbledon, had special words for him.
“Dear Novak, you have made us most proud once again. Thank you for the joy you have given us and the pride that we live in the era of the great Novak Đoković! I heartily congratulate you on winning your fifth Wimbledon trophy. You have shown us that only with perseverance, self-belief, and dedicated work are there no unconquerable obstacles. I wish you good health and much luck in all future competitions!” Mihajlović stated in her congratulatory message.
Two years before that, she and her family took over the honor from Novak Đoković’s family of hosting the patron saint’s day (slava) of the Belgrade Cathedral Church, Saint Archangel, as she warmly shook his hand with him.
At that time, there was nothing controversial about the character and work of the greatest tennis player of all time.
But who cares about reputation anymore, when one needs to prove and demonstrate loyalty? But not to God and the patron saint’s day shared with the same Đoković, but to the great leader.
