Believers of the Roman Catholic Church and other Western churches are celebrating the greatest Christian holiday – the resurrection of Jesus Christ, a holiday that symbolizes the victory of life over death. Belgrade Archbishop Ladislav Nemet stated that peace begins with all people individually, with the message that in today’s world, where it is easy to spread the language of hate, the language of understanding and truth is necessary.

On Holy Saturday, Cardinal Nemet led the Easter Vigil at the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

A portion of Orthodox Christians around the world who belong to churches of the Western rite are today celebrating the greatest Christian holiday – the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The resurrection of the Son of God is the foundation of the Christian faith, the renewal of life, and a symbol of the indestructibility of the spirit upon which faith in God rests.

According to Christian belief, Christ rose on the third day after death. According to the gospels, the event took place at Jesus’ tomb, and the joyful news was announced to the myrrh-bearing women by the Archangel Gabriel.

The holiday begins by attending a solemn service, which serves as a reminder that Jesus Christ, the Messiah, who was incarnated of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man, came into earthly life to save all mankind from sin through his sacrifice on the cross, and then rose from the dead.

It is customary for believers to bring Easter eggs and food to the Easter Mass, which the priest then blesses.

Eggs are colored primarily in red

For Easter, the coloring of eggs is common everywhere, primarily in red, which represents the symbol of new life.

According to tradition, the first eggs were gifted to Emperor Tiberius by Mary Magdalene, who came to Rome with the message of the resurrection.

The egg is a symbol of the renewal of nature and life, and just as the yule log burning on the hearth gives a special charm to Christmas Eve, the red Easter egg signifies joy both for those who give it and those who receive it.

The family gathers around a rich table, sets off on a fun search for hidden eggs, and in some places, they compete for the strongest one.

This great holiday has also brought a large number of customs that vary from country to country.

Pope Leo XIV called on believers during the vigil in St. Peter’s Basilica to commit to peace

Last night, during the evening vigil in St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV called on believers not to fall asleep in the face of the scale of conflicts raging across the world, but to commit to peace.

He said that distrust and fear have allowed war, injustice, and the isolation of peoples and states to sever the ties between people, Ansa reports.

“The world is ravaged by wars and injustice, but we must not be paralyzed, because stones can also roll away from our graves, such as distrust, fear, egoism, malice, and also war, injustice, and closedness among nations and states,” Pope Leo XIV said.

He said that many men and women throughout the centuries, with the help of God, rolled away those stones, perhaps with great effort, sometimes even at the cost of their lives, but with good fruits that we still enjoy today.

Before thousands of believers, he called on Catholics to follow the example of the saints who fought for justice, so that the Easter gifts of harmony and peace may grow and flourish everywhere.

During the service, he did not mention specific conflicts.

Pope Leo XIV said last week that God rejects the prayers of leaders who start wars and have “hands full of blood.”

On Tuesday, he issued a direct appeal to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, calling on him to find an “exit from the war.”

During the service, Pope Leo XIV baptized 10 adults who joined the Catholic faith yesterday.

He will conclude the Easter celebration this morning with a Mass in St. Peter’s Square, when he will deliver a blessing and a message to the believers.
