Member of the Main Board of the Socialist Party of Serbia Dejan Ćurčić and President of the SPS Kuršumlija Municipal Board Milan Stepanović have left the party, local media report, stating that the two socialists said this was “their moral act because the expulsion of Branko Ružić betrayed the party’s ideology and marked the final attempt to return the SPS to its program.”

In explaining their decision, as reported by the Prokupljepres.rs portal, they recalled that Branko Ružić was expelled from membership in the SPS on August 31, even though he was “its most intellectually recognizable senior official and a genuine advocate of the ideology of the Socialist Party of Serbia.”

“It is completely clear that his expulsion from SPS membership does not reflect the will of SPS members, much less SPS voters, who saw in his work, proposals and public appearances a chance for the SPS to return to its original principles and program. It is also completely clear that Branko Ružić’s expulsion from the SPS is solely in the interest of an alienated minority within the SPS that has become completely politically and ideologically lost, and which, through its actions and expressed party discipline — which Branko Ružić allegedly did not have — brought the SPS to the verge of the electoral threshold,” Ćurčić and Stepanović emphasized in their reasons for leaving the party.

They added that Branko Ružić cannot be forgiven for submitting his resignation when any other moral person would have felt the need to do the same.

“Branko Ružić cannot be forgiven for wanting a clear and promising future for the Socialist Party of Serbia, because by doing so he also wanted a future for the citizens of Serbia. For all of the above reasons, we as SPS members no longer see any reason to remain in that party. We did not become socialists because we once became members of the SPS; rather, we became members of the SPS because we are personally committed to the idea of social justice. Since the SPS no longer has any points of contact with the idea of social justice, and since by expelling Branko Ružić from membership, as the last fighter for returning the SPS to its original program, it has officially sealed the betrayal of its own ideology, our moral act is also to leave the party,” the two socialists explain why they no longer wish to be part of the SPS.

It is also stated that they had been members of the SPS for twenty years and had never belonged to any other party.
