Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had a “long and substantive” phone conversation with Trump today following the American president’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Zelensky also said he would meet with Trump in Washington on Monday to discuss a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. No agreement was reached on ending the war in Ukraine at the Trump-Putin meeting.
Zelensky said that Trump had briefed him on the “main points” of his conversation with the Russian president in Alaska. The Ukrainian president thanked Trump for the invitation to meet with him in person in Washington on Monday and said they would “discuss all the details about ending the killing and the war.”
Zelensky reiterated the importance of Europe’s involvement, the AP agency reports.
“It is important for Europeans to be involved at every stage to ensure reliable security guarantees alongside America,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian president said he first spoke only with Trump, and then other European leaders joined the call. In total, Trump’s conversation with Zelensky and the other European leaders lasted about an hour and a half.
“We also discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukrainian security,” he said.
Yesterday’s Trump-Putin summit concluded without any concrete progress on ending the war in Ukraine. Trump spoke with Zelensky on his way back from Alaska.
Upon his return to Washington, Trump went directly from the plane into his car and did not address reporters.
