After nearly two and a half decades of living in Germany, where he built a career in marketing and construction, Srđan Strainović realized that material wealth does not guarantee inner peace. Although he ran a successful company in Frankfurt, a chronic lack of time for family and the alienation of the Western lifestyle led him to make a radical change – returning to his hometown village of Lopatnica near Kraljevo.

“I spent more than half of my life in Germany, I had only money, but I was not happy. I worked all day, I didn’t see my wife or children. There you only work and sleep. You don’t have anyone to go out for coffee with, everything is scheduled two months in advance,” explains Srđan.

A love that connects cultures: From Iran to a Serbian village

His strongest support in this decision was his wife Nasim, originally from Iran, who for love accepted Orthodoxy and took the name Jelena. Born in Spain and raised in Germany, this educated architect today is raising two children with her husband in the heart of Serbia. In their home, alongside Serbian and English, German, Spanish, and Farsi are spoken equally. Srđan highlights the incredible similarity between the Serbian and Iranian people, especially in terms of deep respect for family values.

A thorny path to a successful organic farm

Returning to his ancestral land in 2018 was not easy at all. The Strainović family bought 27 hectares of land and faced complete unfamiliarity with rural life. Initial mistakes cost them dearly – from livestock destroying crops to failures in raspberry cultivation. However, persistence and savings helped them overcome the losses and become certified producers of organic food.

Today, their estate operates as a sustainable economy, but they have gone a step further by introducing a specific form of rural tourism. Instead of a classic vacation, they offer guests “working tourism.” Visitors actively participate in daily tasks – from mowing grass and caring for animals to preparing firewood for winter, which represents a real attraction in this area.

Happiness found in the peace of Lopatnica

Despite initial skepticism from neighbors, the Strainović family has proven they are there to stay. For Jelena, life in the village has brought the long-desired sense of togetherness that they lacked abroad.

“In Germany I was alone with the children all day, I saw Srđan only in the evening, when he was already too tired. We had money, but our family life suffered. We wanted a different future. In the end, courage paid off. If you love, everything is easier,” she concludes for Agro TV.

After four years of living in Serbia, this unusual family confirms that true happiness lies in the simplicity and freedom offered by life in nature.
