Panic in Malaga

The Spanish civil protection agency sent a mass warning to phones in the province of Malaga last night, warning of an “extreme risk of rain,” the BBC reports.

The area, including popular tourist resorts such as Marbella, Velez, and Estepona, is expected to be hardest hit by the new weather phenomenon known as “Dana”.

Other parts of Spain, including Catalonia and the coast of Tarragona, are also under a red alert, while orange alerts are in place in Valencia, Andalusia, and the Balearic Islands.

Schools in Malaga have been closed, as have many supermarkets.

Around 3,000 people near the Guadalhorce River have been ordered to leave their homes.

Andalusian regional government minister Antonio Sanz said that certain areas along the river had been evacuated, but not entire neighborhoods.
