Naturalized Pirot resident Kendi Davison, originally from Australia, moved to Pirot with her husband four years ago. They settled in a small village about ten minutes from the city, bought a house, and began their new life in a place they say completely captivated them. Reflecting on their decision to relocate so far from their home in Australia, they describe it as the best decision they’ve made in recent years.

As Kendi told ST, their decision to move to Pirot wasn’t entirely random. She has distant relatives in the area and had visited before, but she and her husband were especially enchanted by the peaceful village lifestyle, the stunning nature surrounding Pirot, and the incredible, natural, unprocessed, and healthy food—all of which can be easily found at the local green market.

Kendi also has a highly unique hobby: making “memory quilts”.

These quilts or mats are intricately stitched with authentic children’s clothing items, starting from newborn onesies. The quilts tell a story of a child’s growth, featuring details such as the child’s name, birth date, and christening.

“These quilts have incredible emotional value, and the best part is that I make them as a hobby and purely for my own enjoyment. The first quilt I made was a gift for a friend I met shortly after moving here. She was absolutely thrilled, and that’s how it all started. Right now, I’m working on memory quilts that I plan to donate to children in the pediatric ward of Pirot’s hospital to brighten their upcoming holidays”, Kendi explained.

She noted that the materials for her unique quilts are mostly sourced locally, primarily from Pirot. For anything she can’t find there, she orders from Belgrade.

Kendi says that what fascinates her most about Pirot is the food.

“Everyone here loves burek, and so do I, although it’s not exactly great for staying in shape”, Kendi says, laughing.

“The food here is amazing—healthy, unprocessed, and fresh. The green market in Pirot is incredible, offering such an abundance of fresh and wholesome produce. It’s truly fascinating. But what stands out even more are the people. Everyone is wonderful, welcoming, and helpful. The neighbors are amazing, always willing to lend a hand. It’s unbelievable“, Kendi shared with ST.
