Students and citizens called for a protest in front of the Rectorate building after members of the Criminal Police Directorate (UKP) raided the institution earlier today. Shortly before the start of the protest, a police intervention occurred as they pushed back citizens, leading to several incidents and physical clashes between the police and demonstrators.
Members of the Gendarmerie retreated toward the terminus of bus line 27, while a cordon of the Police Brigade is preventing citizens from following them.
A police cordon was formed at the intersection near the National Museum, and after an attempt to disperse the citizens who surrounded the police, one young man was detained.
Clashes between the police and citizens broke out again at that location. The police struck those gathered with batons, and some citizens threw soil from planters at them, N1 reports.
As a reminder, members of the Criminal Police Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Serbia entered the premises of the Rectorate of the University of Belgrade by order of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office as part of a comprehensive investigation into the death of a 25-year-old female student and potential irregularities in the work of the Rectorate.
As confirmed by the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, during the collection of information and evidence from interviewed citizens so far, data was obtained regarding the existence of unsecured entrances from the Rectorate building to the Faculty of Philosophy.
