The collapse of a large number of buildings has been reported, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates there is a 44 percent probability that the death toll could exceed 10,000, as well as a 30 percent chance that the number of fatalities could surpass 100,000 — although official casualty figures are still arriving slowly.
According to USGS data, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck an area approximately 160 kilometers west of Caracas, and less than one minute later it was followed by an even stronger quake measuring 7.5 in magnitude.

The earthquakes were recorded at around 6 p.m. local time and were felt across the country, particularly in Caracas.
Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, declared a state of emergency and announced that more than 20 aftershocks had been recorded. Rescue teams are searching through the rubble for survivors, while injuries and significant material damage have been reported, including collapsed buildings and widespread power outages. Caracas Airport has been closed due to damage.
France 24 and other international news agencies reported scenes of panic in the streets of the capital, where residents rushed outdoors while rescue workers searched for victims trapped beneath the debris.

History of Earthquakes in Venezuela
According to Reuters, this is one of the strongest earthquakes to hit Venezuela in several decades.
Venezuela is located in a seismically active region where the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates meet.
According to USGS data, an estimated 30,000 people were killed when a powerful earthquake struck the cities of Mérida and Caracas in 1812.
In 1967, a strong earthquake hit Caracas, causing high-rise buildings to collapse and claiming 240 lives.
