Meteorologist Ivan Ristić stated that the cooling trend began today, accompanied by rain, and will last until Thursday. Temperatures will then rise again to over 35 degrees Celsius before clouds, rain, and a noticeable temperature drop return on Friday.

Ristić noted that the weather today will be changeable with occasional showers, which will be most pronounced in the afternoon and evening hours.

“On Thursday, the temperature will again be over 35 degrees. It will be really hot for one day; it might even be 37 degrees again in Belgrade. Then on Friday, a polar vortex, a polar front, arrives. Cold air from the north, a polar vortex, is being released into Europe for the first time this summer and is bringing a stronger cold front. So, on Friday, clouds, rain, and a noticeable drop in temperature will arrive. This will lead us into a period that will be much more normal, with temperatures between 26 and 31 degrees, for example, for almost the rest of August, and we’ll be able to take a little breather,” Ristić told Tanjug.

He added that a stabilization of the weather is expected at the beginning of September, when temperatures will generally be between 30 and 35 degrees.

Ristić emphasized that we are witnessing the fifth heatwave this summer and that urbanization has created a heat island.

“A heat island has been created; we can’t cool down overnight. In Belgrade, the temperature is about 25 to 26 degrees, but the minimum temperature in apartments without air conditioning is 31 degrees. It’s harder to sleep at night, and we have big problems. For example, 100 years ago it was also occasionally warm, but it wasn’t so urbanized, and Belgrade could cool down,” Ristić said.

He pointed out that the most extreme heat in Belgrade is in the New Belgrade blocks because they are not surrounded by forest, unlike Ušće and Zvezdara forest, or Knez Mihailova Street, where it is more pleasant due to the air currents from Kalemegdan.

He stated that it is currently late summer and he expects temperatures to be between 30 and 35 degrees until the second half of September, after which, he said, an autumn weather pattern will follow.

He warned that a collision of cooler and African air could lead to storms and advised people to follow the announcements of the Republic Hydrometeorological Institute today.
