Friedrich Merz, a candidate for the new chancellor of Germany, plans to put a resolution to a vote next week proposing that a state of emergency be declared in the country due to the influx of illegal migrants, Bild reported today.
According to the publication, Merz, a candidate from the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU), seeks to declare a state of emergency related to asylum, bypassing European legislation at Germany’s borders.
In a letter to the European Commission, Faeser stated that the country’s resources, as well as those of individual federal states, to accommodate migrants are “practically exhausted.”

Merz Calls for State of Emergency Due to Migrants
“Migrants should consistently be denied entry at Germany’s borders, and those legally required to leave the country should be detained until deportation,” Bild quoted Merz as saying.
In October, the German Federal Criminal Police reported that the number of migrants suspected of criminal activities, excluding immigration law violations, had increased by 25.1% in 2023 compared to the previous year.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser ordered temporary control measures at all German land borders in September to reduce the influx of migrants as part of efforts to combat the terrorist threat.
