Novak Đoković is certainly the third best tennis player in the world, and in such a situation, he can still attack Grand Slam tournaments, only now he is not the overwhelming favorite, but sometimes he needs a bit of luck or for things to align more than before. This is the conclusion reached after he reached the semifinals at this year’s Roland Garros, where Jannik Sinner stopped him.
The Serbian tennis player did not take a set from Sinner but had three set points. It was very similar to their clash in the 2023 Wimbledon semifinals, when Đoković took all three sets.
John McEnroe shares a similar opinion but goes a step further in praising the Serb. McEnroe is prone to going to extremes and overly praising someone, but in this case, every word seems to be spot on.
“Why should Novak retire when he is still competitive?” was the first question he posed to everyone in an interview for the Italian “Corriere della Sera.”
McEnroe won his last Grand Slam eight years before his retirement in 1992 and was 20th in the world when he decided to say goodbye to tennis. On the other hand, Đoković is in a completely different situation.
“He still competes best with Alcaraz and Sinner. He has two great assets: experience and the skill to deal with difficult moments.”
He cannot hide his delight at what Đoković is doing.
“It’s impossible not to admire him. He is the LeBron James of world tennis. Due to his age, it’s getting harder for him to deal with Jannik and Carlos, but he is still a true miracle. Someone whom science should study.”
He compared Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner.
“Charisma emanates from Alcaraz, and that makes his matches electric. I have to say that Carlos is the most talented tennis player I have ever seen. He is simply brilliant. Charisma cannot be made; you are born with it. Jannik is more consistent, and what is impressive is the cleanliness of his shots and the sound you hear when he hits the ball. I have never heard anything like it. With Alcaraz, I am also impressed by the ease with which he gets out of difficulties that he, also with incredible ease, falls into. He is the only tennis player I would pay to watch. He is the best gift tennis has received after the Big Three. I would say the two of them are like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.”
