Students in blockade have described former President Aleksandar Vučić’s decision to pardon the driver accused of attempting to murder their fellow student Sonja Ponjavić, who was injured in an incident in January last year, as unacceptable, saying it undermines the very purpose of the pardon as a legal institution and sets a dangerous precedent for its use.

“Pardon is an extraordinary legal instrument that must be applied in rare and justified circumstances, not used as a means of political revenge and personal vendettas,” the students in blockade said in a statement.

As they emphasized, a pardon “must not become a political weapon.”

They said that such conduct undermines trust in institutions and the very foundations of the legal order.

They stated that the task of the future government would be to ensure the transparent and accountable exercise of the constitutional power to grant pardons, with clear criteria and accountability mechanisms to prevent political abuse.

“May this never happen again,” the students in blockade said.

As a reminder, more than a month after Aleksandar Vučić announced that he had pardoned 49 people before submitting his resignation, the public was officially informed of the identities of 23 individuals who had received pardons. The Higher Courts in Belgrade and Novi Sad announced that they had received the pardon decisions from the Ministry of Justice today.
