At today’s session, the Republic Headquarters for Emergency Situations considered the current hydrological and meteorological situation, the consequences of the historically low water level of the Danube River, as well as measures to mitigate the impact of the announced prolonged heatwave.

At the session, which was held on the initiative of Prime Minister Đuro Macut and chaired by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Police and Commander of the Republic Headquarters Ivica Dačić, special attention was paid to the possible consequences for the population’s water supply, the functioning of the Danube-Tisa-Danube Hydrosystem, agriculture, the economy, energy security, as well as the increased risk of outdoor fires due to high temperatures, the Government of Serbia announced.

As stated, in accordance with the conclusions from the session of July 30, the Sector for Emergency Management of the Ministry of Internal Affairs will organize daily meetings of operational headquarters starting August 4 to coordinate activities in case of heatwaves, drought, lack of drinking water, and outdoor fires.

The Republic Headquarters for Emergency Situations issued an appeal to citizens, local self-governments, the economy, and all users to rationally and responsibly use electrical energy and water, especially water for irrigation, in order to ensure the stable functioning of the water supply system, energy system, and other vital systems.

At the session, conclusions were drawn regarding the continued monitoring of the situation in the territory of AP Vojvodina, appropriate recommendations to the bodies of AP Vojvodina, and it was once again ordered that all available material-technical and human capacities of all entities that can contribute to mitigating the consequences be made available, as well as increased supervision over the state of watercourses and surface waters.

“The Republic Headquarters for Emergency Situations will continue to monitor the development of the situation and, in cooperation with competent authorities and institutions, take all necessary measures to protect the lives and health of citizens, preserve critical infrastructure, and mitigate the consequences of unfavorable hydrological and meteorological conditions,” the statement reads.
