Serbian national team player and Miami basketball player, Nikola Jović, briefly traded the court for a classroom. A humorous video appeared on social media in which Jović takes on the role of a professor and holds the “first class” of the Serbian language for his teammates, accompanied by volleys of laughter and completely sincere reactions from the Americans.
In the improvised school desks were Tyler Herro and Kel’el Ware, who seriously tried to master the basics of the language, but it quickly turned out that Serbian is no easy task at all.
Especially when it comes to sounds like “č” and “lj”.
The class started quite simply – with the word “zdravo” (hello). Herro somehow managed to get close to the correct pronunciation, while Ware seemed completely confused.
Real problems, however, arose when Jović moved on to the next lesson and the word “učitelj” (teacher).
The American basketball players struggled with the pronunciation, repeating syllable by syllable, and Jović patiently helped them, explaining through an example: “I am your teacher”. When Ware finally understood the meaning, praise and a smile followed – but only briefly.
The absolute hit of the class was the word “kikiriki” (peanut). Ware’s attempt at pronunciation sounded more like “Kiki Riki”, which caused uncontrollable laughter for both Jović and the others present.
“I don’t understand your language, Niko,” Ware admitted at one point, practically giving up on further attempts.
For the end, Jović gave them one more word – “pomoć” (help), with a humorous remark that this is exactly what they need most at this moment. He ended the class in a professor-like manner, with a message in Serbian:
“Your teacher loves you”.
While Jović obviously enjoyed his new role, his “students” had to admit defeat.
“Niko, I’m failing the grade,” Kel’el Ware concluded, officially ending this charming Serbian language class.
