During the night, Russia carried out a massive attack with missiles and drones on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, using heavy bombers. Air raid sirens were sounded across the country, even in regions far from the front line. Poland closed the airspace near the cities of Lublin and Rzeszów in the southeast of the country until at least 6 a.m. this morning, due to “unplanned military activities related to ensuring national security,” the flight tracking service Flightradar24 reported.
Poland closed airspace
The Polish armed forces announced that they scrambled jets to secure their airspace after Russia launched attacks on Ukraine, Reuters reported.
“In connection with the activity of Russian long-range aviation conducting attacks on the territory of Ukraine, Polish and allied aircraft began operating in our airspace,” the Polish army said in a post on the X platform.
According to the statement, the actions are preventive and aimed at securing the airspace and protecting citizens.

5 Russian bombers triggered major alert in Ukraine
Data from the Ukrainian Air Force showed that air raid warnings were in effect across the country from 5 a.m. this morning.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha announced that Russia used hundreds of drones and missiles in the attack.
According to Ukrainian media, five Russian Tu-95 bombers took off from Olenya airfield in the Murmansk region around 1:45 a.m. local time. Shortly afterward, around 2:25, the Kyiv City Military Administration warned that MiG-31K bombers had taken off, which triggered alerts nationwide.
The Ukrainian Air Force further reported at 3:52 a.m. about the probable takeoff of Tu-95 bombers from the Engels airbase. During the night, numerous Ukrainian regions were under threat from swarms of Shahed drones, and explosions were recorded in Kyiv, Kyiv region, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi region, and Sumy.
Five-story building destroyed, injuries reported
The greatest damage was recorded in Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia. In the capital, a five-story building was partially destroyed, and residential infrastructure was damaged in several districts, confirmed Tymir Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration. Non-residential buildings and parked cars were also damaged.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported at least five injured persons who were hospitalized. “Missiles are still falling on the city,” he said, urging residents to remain in shelters. Around Kyiv, several houses and buildings caught fire. In the city of Fastiv, five bakery employees were injured when the facility ignited during the attack.
Heavy strike on Zaporizhzhia
In Zaporizhzhia, the regional center of the partially occupied oblast, Russians attacked civilian infrastructure, reported Governor Ivan Fedorov. Nine houses, 14 apartment buildings, a school, and industrial facilities were damaged. In two attacks during the night, five people were injured.
“A treacherous tactic, an inhuman thirst for human suffering,” commented Regina Kharchenko, acting head of the Zaporizhzhia City Council, adding: “Someone’s photographs are burning, children’s toys, books. People are suffering, and the city is once again counting its wounds.”
Poland scrambled fighter jets, airspace closed over two regions
Explosions were also heard in the Khmelnytskyi region, where air defenses were active, but according to initial reports, there were no casualties. In response to the massive attack, Poland scrambled its fighter jets, as in previous cases when Russian strikes threatened western Ukraine. Airspace over Lublin and Rzeszów was temporarily closed due to “unplanned military activities.”
These incidents come at a time when Russian drones and aircraft are increasingly entering NATO airspace, raising the level of alert across the alliance. Russia intensified its air strikes on Ukraine during the spring and summer of 2025, and officials are warning of a new wave of attacks targeting energy infrastructure with the arrival of colder months.
