In the snap parliamentary elections in Serbia, in which 250 members of the National Assembly are being elected, polling stations opened at exactly 7 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m. Citizens are choosing between 18 electoral lists with a total of 2,418 candidates.

Lines Before Opening

At some polling stations, people were already waiting in line: queues formed before the polling stations opened. Tanjug reports that there have been crowds in Belgrade since early morning, with citizens waiting to vote. In Novi Sad, a line had already formed by 5 a.m. There, 345,943 citizens are eligible to vote at 221 polling stations. In Kragujevac, 153,121 citizens were eligible to vote at 174 polling stations, with large queues forming well before the opening.

There were also crowds at polling stations for voters from Kosovo and Metohija. A large number of citizens from Kosovo and Metohija arrived in their own cars. Voters from Kosovo are casting their ballots at 60 polling stations in Raška, Tutin, Vranje, and Kuršumlija. For some of them, this means traveling more than 150 kilometers each way.

The Numbers

According to the final data from the Republic Electoral Commission (RIK), 6,451,292 voters are eligible to cast their ballots at a total of 8,392 polling stations. Among them are 29 polling stations in institutions for the enforcement of criminal sanctions and 93 abroad, in 37 countries, where 102,147 voters are registered. For the first time, voting abroad is taking place simultaneously with voting in Serbia, so voting in Chicago will begin at 1 a.m., while in New York and Washington it will begin at 2 a.m.

The elections are being monitored by 16,271 observers from 26 domestic and 57 foreign organizations, including 622 foreign observers.

Turnout and RIK

Turnout data had not been released at the time this article was written. RIK announced press conferences at 8, 11:05, 13:05, 15:05, 17:05, and 19:05. At these conferences, it will provide updates on turnout and the course of election day. The electoral silence period remains in effect until polling stations close.

The CRTA observation mission announced before the elections that 116 incidents involving elements of physical violence and verbal threats had been recorded during the campaign. The mission also expressed suspicion that seven of the 18 electoral lists were fake or satellite lists, and challenged the accuracy of the voter registry. Those allegations concern the campaign period, not election day.
