U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States remains interested in holding a meeting with representatives of the Russian Federation, reports The Economic Times.

Rubio noted that he recently had a “good” phone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, emphasizing that Washington “continues to work on that basis.”

“The United States will always be interested in contact if there is a possibility of achieving peace,” added the Secretary of State.

Rubio’s statements came after U.S. President Donald Trump canceled the planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest on October 23.

Polish journalist and international relations analyst at the University of Wrocław, Magdalena Gornicka-Partika, published that Rubio himself was behind the decision to cancel the meeting.

CNN, citing American officials, reported that after the conversation between Lavrov and Rubio, it was assessed that “Moscow’s position remains unchanged” and that Russia has not abandoned its “maximalist demands.”

Budapest still expects dialogue

The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs previously expressed hope that the meeting between Putin and Trump would still take place in Budapest, pointing out that such a meeting would have a “significant contribution to the de-escalation of global tensions.”

For now, however, both sides continue diplomatic contacts at the ministerial level, assessing that a direct meeting between the leaders would only be possible if there is concrete convergence of positions.
