U.S. President Donald Trump said his administration has legal authority to strike vessels off Venezuela that he claims are carrying drugs, but added that he might address Congress if he decides to begin ground strikes.
“We are allowed to do that and if we do it by land, I may again address Congress,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office of the White House.
He stated that the U.S. government is “fully prepared” to target drug traffickers on land.
“We will hit them very hard if they come by land. We will probably inform Congress and explain exactly what we are doing when it comes to the land. We don’t have to do that, but I think… I would like to do that,” Trump said.
He also said he could take “very serious action” against Colombia because of its role in the international drug trade.
Trump called Colombian President Gustavo Petro “a bad guy.”
