The lower part of the awning on the third-floor terrace of the Oncology Clinic at the University Clinical Center in Niš collapsed today, announced Dr. Dragan Milić, director of the nearby Clinic for Cardiovascular Surgery and founder of the Movement for the Decentralization of Serbia (PODES).

According to him, the collapsed part fell onto the terrace itself, as well as around the building, Danas reports.

“It was only luck that prevented more serious consequences because oncology patients sit and spend time on that terrace. Due to the great heat and sun, fortunately, no one was on the terrace. How much more?” Dr. Milić stated on his Instagram profile.

He said that it is “clear that the building was recently renovated, obviously poorly and inadequately.”

“The authorities quickly gave an order to remove the traces of the collapsed terrace so that the public would not be aware of the sloppiness that has prevailed in Niš and Serbia. We arrived a few hours after the collapse when most of the collapsed material had already been removed,” said Dr. Milić, who also published photos from the scene.

He thanked the “conscientious workers of the UKC Niš who informed them about the event and “made it possible for the public to be aware of the continuous negligence that endangers people’s lives.”

Danas forwarded questions to the UKC regarding this case, and we are awaiting answers.
