The director of the “Batut” Institute, Verica Jovanović, stated today, speaking about the hantavirus that appeared on a cruise ship and claimed three lives, that there has been no mutation of that virus in the world for 30 years and that there is no danger of a pandemic.
“In Serbia, there is no reason for concern because there were no passengers on the controversial cruise ship,” Jovanović told Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) and added that the health system is ready to react in case of need.
She stated that hantavirus is most often transmitted from rodents to humans and appealed to citizens to take care of hygiene, especially when cleaning basements, cottages, and spaces where rodents may be present.
She explained that symptoms differ depending on the type of virus.
“The European type mainly causes kidney problems, while the Andes strain has symptoms similar to the flu but quickly leads to lung damage and breathing problems,” Jovanović said, as reported by the RTS website, reports Beta.
