Police in Split arrested two young men, aged 16 and 18, for attacking two Serbian citizens in a parking lot in the Ravne njive neighborhood, Croatian media reported last night.
It is stated that the attackers allegedly heard the victims speaking the Ekavian dialect in a nearby café and consequently assaulted them in the parking lot.
The attackers are charged with violent behavior and property damage motivated by hatred, reported Dalmatinski portal.
The incident occurred when a group of younger individuals attacked the Serbian citizens, one aged 50 and the other 34. The attackers physically assaulted them and tried to pull them out of their van, breaking one of the vehicle’s windows in the process, reported Index.hr.
The 50-year-old victim has reportedly been working in Split for a long time.
After the attackers fled, the two Serbian citizens went to the police station to report the incident.
They refused medical assistance as they did not have visible injuries, according to Index.
The police conducted an investigation and quickly identified and arrested two suspects, while two others, believed to be of similar age, are still being sought, reports Tanjug.
The minor, aged 16, admitted to the crime during police questioning and was released, but a criminal complaint will be filed against him through regular procedure for violent behavior and property damage in connection with a hate crime. The other attacker will also be reported for the same offenses.
