Russian military aircraft were intercepted by NORAD, American and Canadian aircraft, and then remained in international airspace.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) announced on Thursday that it had detected and tracked multiple Russian military aircraft operating in the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) near Alaska.
According to a statement from the U.S.-Canadian defense organization, NORAD detected and tracked two Russian Tupolev Tu-95 bombers, two Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets, and one Beriev A-50 early warning aircraft operating in Alaska’s ADIZ zone.
NORAD stated that it responded by scrambling two F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, two F-35 Lightning II jets, one Boeing E-3 Sentry, and four Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft in order to intercept, positively identify, and track the Russian planes.
The Russian military aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter the sovereign airspace of the United States or Canada, the statement said. The aircraft were monitored until they exited Alaska’s ADIZ zone.
