“Not far from the famous Ohrid lies a mystical snake island where humans have not resided for centuries, and where wild flora and fauna have developed over the years, creating a unique world unlike anywhere else in Europe,” describes Robert Dačešin.
“Have you heard of Golem Grad? The island on Lake Prespa, also known as Snake Island, is located in North Macedonia, just a few kilometers from Greece and Albania. In addition to a high concentration of snakes, such as vipers, the island is a rich habitat for other rare plant and animal species. It also conceals some historically significant archaeological remains and represents a true treasure trove for researchers, biologists, and adventurers,” introduces Robert Dačešin, a travel writer from Bosnia and Herzegovina whose YouTube reports are very popular, writes Punkufer.hr.
Among Robert’s many beautiful and exciting destinations is a trip some time ago to Golem Grad, an island covering about 20 hectares (approximately 49 acres) that has been declared a nature reserve due to its specific geomorphological features and unique plant and animal species.
The island was only opened to visitors in 2008, and today it piques the curiosity of those who love snakes and turtles. Although the situation has changed since then, Golem Grad remains uncrowded.
“Not far from the famous Ohrid lies a mystical snake island where humans have not resided for centuries, and where wild flora and fauna have developed over the years, creating a unique world unlike anywhere else in Europe,” Dačešin describes, adding that until recently, only biologists were allowed on the island.
Today, it is home to about 7,000 non-venomous grass snakes, 2,000 vipers (100 snakes per hectare, which is a very dense population), as well as just over 2,000 turtles.
Only 750 meters long and 450 meters wide, the picturesque island is surrounded on all sides by rocks and caves 20 to 30 meters high. Above them lies a plateau with two hills on the north and south of the island.
There, you can see several ruins and a church, which has been declared a cultural monument. To see what this Mediterranean snake oasis looks like firsthand, watch the video.
