The members of the United Nations Security Council unanimously condemned the killing of a Serbian member of the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon, who died from wounds sustained in a mortar attack on June 4.

In a joint statement by all 15 members of the Security Council, it was stated that the Serbian peacekeeper was killed after mortar shells struck his position. Two other United Nations peacekeepers were wounded in the same attack.

The Council members expressed their deepest condolences to the family of the fallen soldier, while wishing the injured members of the mission a speedy and successful recovery.

Although the statement did not specify who was behind the attack, the Security Council called on the United Nations to conduct an urgent and thorough investigation so that those responsible for the attack can be identified and brought to justice.

In Kraljevo, on June 10, with the highest military honors, Sergeant First Class of the Serbian Armed Forces Milovan Jovanović (36), a member of the Second Army Brigade, was laid to rest after succumbing to wounds sustained while serving in Lebanon.

As a reminder, Jovanović was seriously wounded on June 4 when a projectile struck a United Nations base housing peacekeepers, including part of the Serbian contingent. After receiving first aid at the base, he was transported by helicopter to a university hospital in Beirut, where he later died from his injuries.

Two UNIFIL members from Spain and El Salvador were also injured in the same shelling.

The UNIFIL mission, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, was established in 1978 through Security Council Resolutions 425 and 426 with the aim of preserving peace and stability in southern Lebanon.
