The largest project of archaeological research ever carried out in the Belgrade area.

The first phase of protective archaeological research of the coastal rampart of the Belgrade Fortress, which was carried out within the realization of the Linear Park project, encompassing its sub-units 1.1 and 1.2, has been successfully completed.

The research lasted just under fourteen months, beginning from the start of March 2025 until mid-April 2026, totaling 285 working days. During this period, an area of about 1.2 hectares, specifically the route, was investigated.

The coastal rampart is a defensive line that was created and used in several phases, starting from the 15th century all the way to the 20th century. During the research, the route of the original coastal rampart was discovered with towers from the time of Despot Stefan Lazarević, as well as later reconstructions and additions, including the large defensive structure of the bastion of St. James from the 17th and 18th centuries, from the times of Ottoman and Austrian rule in Belgrade.

In addition to the fortifications, a series of structures from the late 17th century was discovered alongside the rampart, witnessing the intensive use of space in the coastal area despite the flood-prone terrain.

These archaeological investigations collected data on the origin and development of the coastal rampart over four centuries, but also on its devastation, which began with the construction of the railway track at the end of the 19th century and continued at the beginning of the Second World War, when a large part of the rampart and bastion route was destroyed by the construction of a second railway track and was repeatedly exposed to war actions. The data obtained are the basis for the creation of a conservation and restoration project for the discovered remains, as well as for the creation of a project for their presentation and revitalization within the route of the Linear Park.

The investor of the “Linear Park” project is the Secretariat for Investments, the contract holder is W.D. Concord West DOO, and the research is being conducted by the Archaeological Institute, in cooperation with the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments and the Belgrade City Museum.
