Today is the “statehood day of so-called Kosovo,” which the Albanian community in Chicago used to lobby for their flag to be placed on a mast in the center of Chicago, at the famous Daley Plaza, above which is the mayor’s office. The Serbian Times editorial staff is trying to establish exactly when the flag of so-called Kosovo was raised, specifically whether it was on the mast on February 15, on Sretenje. In the meantime, Serbian National Defense, the oldest and most influential Serbian organization in the United States of America, sent a formal warning to the city of Chicago regarding the raising of the flag of the so-called Republic of Kosovo.
In a statement that caused great attention among the Serbian diaspora, the organization founded in 1914 said that the Serbian community “has deep roots in this city since its earliest days” and that the wider Chicago area is home to the largest Serbian community outside of Serbia and the Balkans.
“We will not accept being ignored”
Serbian National Defense emphasizes that the decision to raise the flag was not made in consultation with the Serbian community, even though it is an issue that has deep historical, religious, and identity meaning for Serbs.
“Without any consultation with our community, a decision was made to raise the flag of the terrorist and criminal ‘Republic of Kosovo’ at Daley Plaza. This is occupied territory that remains deeply painful for the Serbian people, because that land is the center of our faith, culture, and identity. For our community, this act is neither symbolic nor harmless, but a political message that directly insults us,” the statement says.
This is a formal warning to the City of Chicago @chicago and to the entities that operate Daley Plaza @DaleyCenterChi, @PBCChi and @Transwestern.

Warning to city institutions
A formal warning was sent to the city of Chicago, as well as to the institutions that manage Daley Plaza – the Public Building Commission and the company Transwestern.
The statement says that such a move is “unacceptable” and that, if the flag is raised again without dialogue and respect for the Serbian community, a protest will follow.
“Such a procedure is unacceptable. If this terrorist flag of the so-called Republic of Kosovo is raised again in our city without dialogue or respect for our community, you can expect a very visible public protest such as you have not seen before,” the post states.
“We demand that this issue be resolved immediately. Engage in a dialogue with our community. Show respect for the people who built this city. Do not repeat this mistake. Do not even think about insulting us like this again,” they conclude.
Serbs in Chicago
The Serbian community in Chicago has a history longer than a century. Thousands of Serbian families have made a significant contribution to the development of industry, construction, hospitality, and the public life of this city. Numerous churches, cultural centers, and organizations bear witness to the strong identity and connection of our community with Chicago.
For now, there is no official response from the city authorities to the sent warning, but it is certain that the coming days will show whether there will be talks or the announced protests.
