Legendary Catherine O’Hara has died at the age of 72.
Actress Catherine O’Hara passed away on Friday, sources close to her family have confirmed. News of her death has resonated across the world, while the cause has not yet been officially announced, TMZ reports.
O’Hara leaves behind a rich, decades-long career. She became widely known to audiences as the mother of Kevin McCallister in the first two installments of the cult classic “Home Alone,” while a new generation of viewers embraced her through the role of the eccentric Moira Rose in the hit series “Schitt’s Creek,” in which she appeared throughout all seasons.
During her career, she also delivered notable performances in numerous film projects, including the satirical films “Best in Show” and “A Mighty Wind,” as well as entries in the “Beetlejuice” franchise, including the original film and its sequel.
Her most recent television appearance was in the series “The Studio,” aired on the Apple TV+ platform, where she starred alongside Seth Rogen. For that project, she received a nomination for the prestigious Emmy Award.
Throughout her career, Catherine O’Hara earned multiple accolades, including an Emmy Award in 2020 for her role in “Schitt’s Creek,” while her first Emmy recognition came back in the early 1980s for her writing work on the comedy show “SCTV Network 90.”
Born in Toronto, she grew up in a large family as the sixth of seven children. She met her life partner, production designer Bo Welch, in the late 1980s while working on the film “Beetlejuice.” They have been married since 1992 and have two sons.
O’Hara was last seen in public in early 2024, when she briefly spoke about the role by which she hoped to be remembered, unaware that it would be one of her final appearances in front of the cameras.
