Truck drivers from Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and Serbia announced that on January 26, all freight border crossings toward Schengen countries will be blocked due to problems caused by the new “Entry-exit” system (EES), which records the entry and exit of carriers, reported Radio-television of Republika Srpska (RTRS).
As stated, these measures come after Brussels did not respect the requests and suggestions of the carriers regarding the easing of procedures at the borders.
The president of the Association for International Transport from Serbia, Nedjo Mandic, explained for Euronews Serbia that the protests do not apply to passenger crossings, but exclusively to freight terminals, where trucks will be parked so that at no point will it be possible to enter or exit with goods.
“Literally, imports and exports will stop, and supply chains practically do not function without our carriers,” Mandic emphasized.
According to him, in the last two years, they tried to solve the carriers’ problem through diplomatic channels, via the European Commission and the authorities in BiH and Serbia, but there were no concrete answers.
“During this time, nothing happened. We left a deadline of a month and a half for the problem to be solved, but without results. That is why we decided on more drastic protest measures,” said Mandic.
